How to delete tweets posted before a certain date on X
Updated 2026-10-13 · Written by the TweetXDelete team
To delete every tweet you posted before a certain date, select Posts and replies in TweetXDelete and set Date limit to that date. X itself has no bulk option: its help page says posts can only be deleted manually, one by one. TweetXDelete is a Chrome extension for desktop Chrome. It works inside your existing, logged in X session, scans your account and deletes the posts and replies older than your chosen date in batches.
Date limit deletes everything posted before the date you choose. It is not a date range, so you cannot select a window between two dates. There is also no scheduler: TweetXDelete does not delete old posts automatically over time. It runs only when you start a job and only while the X tab is open.
How Date limit works
Date limit is an optional setting under Advanced options. When you choose a date, the job includes everything posted before that date and leaves everything posted after it untouched. Leave it empty to include your whole scanned history.
Keep the last 7 days is checked by default, so your newest items stay untouched. Untick it only if you want recent items included as well.
The date is the only filter. There are no keyword or engagement filters, and there is no mode that deletes only replies: Posts and replies removes both. To keep a few specific older posts, choose a date before them, or delete the posts you want gone on X by hand: click the More icon at the top of the post, then Delete.
Start with a small run
- Install TweetXDelete for Chrome, sign in to the X account you want to clean, click the extension icon and then Open X and show the panel.
- Read the panel warning: Deletion is permanent. No undo, here or on X. Download your data archive first if any of it matters. If your older posts matter to you, request your archive before you continue.
- Under What to delete, select Posts and replies. Everything also removes your reposts and likes, so leave it aside for this walkthrough.
- Open Advanced options. Set Date limit to the date you want to keep from. Set Stop after to 3. It counts from your oldest items, so the trial starts with your oldest posts and replies. Leave Pace on Careful (recommended).
- Click Scan my account. The scan reads your posts first, then your replies timeline, roughly your newest 3,200 items.
- Review the list and the count. Click Start deleting, then check the account, the action and the count in the confirmation before you continue.
- When the trial finishes, check your profile. If the right posts are gone, change or clear Stop after, run Scan my account again and review the new confirmation.
If the log shows Note: X did not fully answer the replies request. Posts are complete; replies may be missing or incomplete., run the scan again later or use your archive as described below.
Reach posts older than the scan
Old tweets are often the ones a scan cannot reach, because X lists roughly your newest 3,200 posts and replies. Your X archive can supply the rest.
- In X settings, open Your account, then Download an archive of your data. X says preparation can take a few days.
- Download the ZIP and extract it on your computer. Your posts and replies are in
tweets.jsinside thedatafolder. - In TweetXDelete, select Posts and replies, open Advanced options and click Load archive file (full history). Choose the extracted file, not the ZIP. Only IDs and dates are read, on your computer, and the file is not uploaded.
- Date limit, Keep the last 7 days and Stop after apply to the imported list too, so the same small trial works here. Then use Start deleting and read the confirmation.
Loading another file replaces the scanned list rather than adding to it. Finish the current run before you load the next file.
Likes and reposts
Likes scans posts you liked, newest first, as far back as X lists them. Older likes need like.js from your archive, loaded with Load like.js from your archive (older likes). Imported likes have no date, so Date limit and Keep the last 7 days can exclude them. Removing a like does not delete the original post. The guide to deleting likes covers this in detail.
Reposts covers only the posts you reposted. Everything runs posts and replies, then reposts, then likes, one stage after another. Each stage scans, shows the list and asks before deleting.
Run the full cleanup and check the result
Requests are spaced out, and the extension waits when X signals a rate limit. Large jobs can take hours, and there is no guaranteed completion time. Keep the X tab open while the job runs. From version 0.4.4 the extension asks your computer not to sleep during a run, though the screen can still turn off. Closing a laptop lid or putting the computer to sleep by hand still pauses the run until the computer wakes.
Stop pauses the job. Wait for STOPPED in the log before closing the tab, then use Resume where it stopped to continue. A completed run shows FINISHED.
A finished queue does not prove that every old post is gone. Scroll your profile back to the date you chose, check the Replies tab and search X for from:yourhandle. If older posts remain, load your archive file and run again.
What deleting old posts leaves behind
- X removes a deleted post from your account, from the timelines of accounts that follow you and from X search results. Reposts of it are removed as well.
- Quote posts and copies other people pasted into their own posts are not removed.
- Posts may be cached or cross posted on third party websites, apps or search engines. X cannot remove those.
- You can only delete your own posts. Replies other people wrote to your old posts stay on X.

What it costs
The first 30 successful operations are included, one shared allowance across posts, likes and reposts together. Deleting a reply counts as a post operation. After that, a one time licence is required; see current pricing. The guide on deleting tweets for free explains what you can do without paying, and the comparison of tweet deleter tools covers other options.
